The Research Fellowship Program
No money for field research? - Check
out the BP/WCS small grants program!
It is a common complaint that postgraduate students cannot do
field research because "there's no money for field
work". In response to this, the BP Conservation Programme (BPCP)
funds a Research Fellowship Program (RFP) which is administered
world-wide by WCS.
Details of the international programme are available
from the
BPCP web site and the
WCS web site
In line with this international initiative, WCS Malaysia and
BP seek to support individual field research projects
by Malaysians that -
- have a clear application to the conservation of threatened
wildlife and wildlife habitat;
- are based on sound and innovative conservation science; and
- encourage practices in conservation that can contribute to
sustainable development.
The maximum grant is US$25,000 (the average grant
is US$10,655),
and projects are limited to one year. Funding covers field costs, and does not include
salary or tuition for the grantee.
Projects in 20 countries in Africa, Asia or Latin America are eligible for
support, including Malaysia. However, there have been comparatively few awards to
Malaysians.
One purpose of the briefing is to increase awareness
of the RFP in Malaysian universities, and to counter the
perception that no money is available for field research. More
important, however, is a discussion of the support which
Research Fellows need to ensure that good projects are not only
funded, but also successfully completed.
